Frequently asked questions

Which payment methods do you accept?

We currently accept payments via Direct Debit and Credit Card. Direct Debit is our preferred method as it avoids potential Credit Card expiry issues, which allows us to serve you better.

Will you support more than one website?

Our monthly WordPress support plans are just for one website. You're welcome to sign up for multiple site if you have more.

What happens if my website breaks?

You can login to your account on this website and use the live chat feature, or you can email us at support@newtlabs.co.uk and we'll get right on it.

Does it matter which web host I use?

All hosts are different, some better than others. Ideally we would like you to host your website with us to ensure that it's fast, secure and so we have better control which makes both of our lives easier when performing updates and fixes. However we're happy to recommend other hosts should you require something in between.

Am I locked into a contract?

No, we like to earn your business every month, and if you want to cancel we're happy to help you transition, risk free.

Can I change my plan after signup?

Yes, you can upgrade, or downgrade as you wish via the subscriptions section in your account area. If you're not sure how to access this, contact us and we'll be more than happy to help.

Where is your team located?

We are based in Cambridge, Uk. We're a team of WordPress experts who love helping people with their online goals. Everyone who works for Newt Labs has full time employment status and we occasionally work with contractors on bigger projects that have tight turnaround times.

How do I know when a task is support, or development?

If it's a fix that seems like it could be solved within 30 minutes, or you have a question, or need advice, then we can help. If it's a change to how your site currently works, or it seems like it will take longer than 30 minutes to resolve then it's likely out of scope. If you're still unsure then here’s a short list of tasks we can help with.

What's your refund policy?

We offer a 100% money back guarantee during the first 30 days of service. Once 30 days have passed, refunds are prorated for the remaining time left in the month.

What are your WordPress support hours?

Our default hours are 9am – 5pm GMT or GMT+1 in the summer months.

Why shouldn't I add plugins directly on production?

We create, track and test versions of your website as it progresses over time. This includes testing new plugins for incompatibility issues before we deploy them to your live site. It's best to ask us to add new plugins to your live site for you, but you can test them yourself directly on your staging website first.

My site has been hacked, can you clean it up?

We're happy to perform a malware cleanup as part of our service. We advise protecting your site with Sucuri's CloudProxy firewall, which is included in our VIP WordPress care plan.

What happens if I exceed my hosting usage?

We're fair and we've found that our clients are as well. We don't have a set limit, but we base it on sharing with others, so if we notice that it's starting to go beyond what we feel is fair, we'll let you know and we can discuss upgrading you to a different plan.

Do you backup my site?

Your site will be backed up off-site in secure locations, on top of that we also backup all of our servers on a regular basis for extra peace of mind.

Can I have ftp access?

As we're responsible for maintaining your website we keep everything locked down to ensure your site is secure and maintainable as possible. We're happy to install plugins and make changes as required using our WordPress care and development plans, or we can setup and give you access to a deployment system via git and ssh if needed, just be aware that there may be a learning curve involved.

Can I install my own plugins and themes?

We have a close relationship with our clients, so you can talk to us about any plugins you want to introduce and we will be more than happy to review and install for you. If you need more control than that we can show you how to use git to version and deploy via a secure SSH connection.

Do you offer a mail service?

Our servers have a strong emphasis on security and performance. Including a mail server would compromise this, so instead we advise using a dedicated service such as G Suite, or Office 365. We're more than happy to advise and help you get setup using one of these applications.

How is caching setup for my site?

We use a combination of opcode, object and page caching at the server level to make your website fast and reliable. We don't use WordPress cache plugins, however we do introduce Redis and Nginx helper plugins to your website, which communicate with the server to flush the cache whenever you update your content. By managing your domain name we can also add Cloudflare for even better security and performance.

What is DNS?

DNS (Domain name system) is an internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Each time a domain name is used it must be translated in order to know where to send the traffic. Domain name records include the web address, subdomains and mail services. These records and more must be managed in order to ensure that the specific traffic goes to the right place when needed.

Do I own my domain name?

Yes, although your domain name lives within our account, we ensure the the registrants details are in your name. If you need to regain control of your domain in the future we can assist with that, or you can use the Namecheap (or other) change ownership option - we just need a heads up to allow it to be transferred out.

Can I change my Nameservers or IP addresses?

We take care of that for you, just pop us a request via email and we'll get right on it.
